Life after the Open

Are you feeling depressed? Does getting out of bed these days pose bigger issues than before? Do you find yourself wandering aimlessly around the Box searching for purpose? This is perfectly normal. You’re simply suffering from POSD, or Post Open Stress Disorder. It commonly affects athletes who don’t know what to do now that five weeks of torture are over. Don’t despair. You’re not alone. And we have some tips on how you can move on and get back to normal.
 
  1. Recover - Yep, you’ve beaten up your body with grueling workouts, some of them multiple times and now’s the time to recoup. Get lots of sleep. Maybe add another rest day to your schedule. Eat well. Play. Give yourself a few weeks to simply rest and recharge. Your body will thank you for it.
  2. Reflect – This is the perfect time to think about how far you’ve come from last year and also what you need to work on for next year. Be sure to admire and appreciate your accomplishments, whatever they may be, and DON’T compare yourself to anyone else or minimize them with qualifiers like “it might not be much, but…” or “I PR’d this but I could have done this…” Be proud of what you’ve done because millions of people can’t do it. At all.
  3. Re-focus - Take a look at where you can improve. Think about movements you either need to work on for efficiency or those you want to have for next year. Then talk to your coach and start creating a plan to work on it. Now’s the perfect time to implement this plan as you’ll have months and months to prepare and improve. But don’t set the bar too high either. Be realistic about what you want to achieve and what you can achieve, and maybe aim a tad higher. Because confidence and effort are all you need for success.
