How to approach — and finish — 17.1

Well Dave told us there’d be dumbbells and he didn’t waste any time revealing them. ICYMI 17.1 is:

10 DB snatches (50/35)
15 burpee box jump overs (24/20)
20 DB snatches
15 burpee box jump overs
30 DB snatches
15 burpee box jump overs
40 DB snatches
15 burpee box jump overs
50 DB snatches
15 burpee box jump overs

20 minute time cap.

This workout is all about the pacing. 20 minutes is plenty of time if you don’t jump out of the gate. Look at how evenly Vellner did each round. He never wavered his pace once. Now if you’re Sam Briggs, feel free to go balls to the wall.

For the snatches:
  • Try to avoid using your hips if the weight is relatively light for you. Save them for the burpee box jump overs. You’ll need them.
  • Be adaptable if this starts working against you in the round of 40 and 50s. Its entirely possible your back will wear down in those big sets - adjust and adapt.
  • If grip becomes an issue, it’s ok to hook grip if that feels comfortable. Don’t rush.

For the burpee box jump overs:
  • Pace yourself. Don’t go crazy on the burpees. Keep them smooth and for God’s sake, breathe.
  • Don’t stand up on the box. Stay low and just keep moving.

What do you think of this workout and what’s your strategy? We’d love to hear it.
